For my second book cover design. I chose the book ‘The Beekeeper's Lament” which was a story about the bee population decrease, their role in pollination, and how one man and his bees feed America.

Since many farmers were impacted by the bee’s colony collapse in 2006, John Miller drove across the country bringing his bees to help pollinate crops. I knew prior that bees are very important but didn’t realize the number of produce they contribute to. I decided to focus on some of the fruits/vegetables they pollinated to educate others.

Thus I made the bees out of avocados, pears, apples, grapes, mini tomatoes, bell peppers, and zucchini. It took some trial and error to build the bees and learned which fruits/vegetables would be best for different parts of the bees. The legs and antennae were made of thin strips of avocado rind, the wings out of thinly sliced apple and pear slices, the bodies out of zucchini, grapes, and bell peppers.

Since honey is produced by bees for bees and consumed by people, I wanted to include it somehow and decided to write the text in. After practice and several tries, I managed to write out the title and the authors name (legibly). I did this by writing on a clear glass plate.

Once the text or drips were perfected, I then photographed, edited my images, and collaged it together to create the book cover.
