I chose one of my childhood favorites that I used to read with my mom; The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

I skimmed the book to re-familiarize myself of some of the overarching themes and motifs. I feel it’s important for the cover to have a connection to some part of the story. I brainstormed some aspects of the book such as the change of seasons, the hint at religion, the bond and friendship of family, animals, and friends, the time of war, and so on. While reading and during watching the movie, I remember I had strong reactions to the three identified things in the title.

The lion, Aslan, was a kind, majestic ruler who emanated a feeling of warmth. The witch was cold, icy, and manipulative. And the wardrobe was beautiful and mysterious. I used those feelings to think of materials I could use to represent their effect. I used a blend of artificial fur and some from my cat to resemble the think yet soft mane of Aslan, aluminum foil which is manipulatable and cold to the touch for the witch, and textured wood-stylized paper for the wardrobe. Since feeling was an important aspect of the experience to me, I decided to die, cut the main words of the title and make it interactive.

Additionally, the inside of the cover flaps are modeled after the inside of a wardrobe, as if when you opened the book, you’d see coats hanging which is why the text is vertical. Same for the back cover. I kept the other type and colors simple not to overwhelm the experiential cover.
